Summary
To provide technical support to the Design & Technology department at Channing School, working under the direction of the Head of Design & Technology.
Detail
Channing School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, skilled and highly organised Design & Technology Technician to join our Design & Technology Department from January 2027.
This is an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious department at a particularly exciting time for Design & Technology at Channing, with the development of a new STEM building incorporating dedicated D&T facilities, due for completion in Autumn 2026. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the delivery of a broad and engaging curriculum encompassing Product Design, Engineering, CAD/CAM and Food Technology.
At Channing, we are committed to providing a stimulating and creative learning environment in which pupils are encouraged to develop their practical skills, confidence, independence and problem-solving abilities. The Design & Technology Department offers pupils opportunities to explore innovative ideas, work with a variety of materials and technologies, and develop their understanding of design and manufacturing processes.
Working under the direction of the Head of Design & Technology, the successful candidate will provide essential technical and practical support to teaching staff and pupils, ensuring that workshops, equipment and resources are prepared, maintained and organised to support high-quality teaching and learning.
The role involves preparing materials and equipment for practical lessons, supporting the safe operation of workshop machinery and digital manufacturing technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters and vinyl cutters, and assisting with the preparation of resources for Food Technology lessons. The successful candidate will also support pupils during practical activities, maintain equipment and workshop facilities, and help ensure that the department operates safely and efficiently.
An important aspect of the role will be maintaining high standards of health and safety, including carrying out routine equipment checks, supporting risk assessments and ensuring appropriate storage and handling of materials and equipment. The postholder will also be responsible for maintaining accurate stock and equipment records, assisting with purchasing and providing general administrative support to the department.
We are looking for a practical, resourceful and well-organised individual with experience of working with materials such as wood, metal and plastics, familiarity with workshop tools and machinery, and a sound understanding of health and safety in a technical environment. Experience of CAD/CAM technologies, Food Technology preparation or working within an educational setting would be advantageous, although not essential.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team. Above all, they will bring enthusiasm, initiative and a flexible approach to supporting the department and will share Channing's Unitarian ethos and commitment to developing fearless learners through inspiring education, exceptional co-curricular opportunities and meaningful partnerships.
