Summary

The School is looking to appoint a pragmatic, passionate and knowledgeable teacher to lead the Learning Support Department and undertake responsibility for the day-to-day running of learning support throughout the whole school.

Detail

The Head of Learning Support will identify pupils with learning difficulties, to ensure proper provision is made for them and to promote a better understanding of these difficulties, in general, and of individual pupils, in particular, across the school.

The Head of Learning Support is required to work closely with, and report to, the Deputy Head and the Director of Studies.

Principal areas of Responsibility

  • Strategic direction of learning support across the school
  • Leading, liaising with and managing the Learning Support Department
  • Responsibility for managing the provision of support
  • Communicating and advising staff and parents of the needs of boys with learning difficulties
  • To ensure the school meets the expectations of current regulations or expectations by IAPS, ISI or other authorities

Leading the Provision of Learning Support

  • Provide professional guidance to staff to secure good teaching for pupils, through both written guidance, meetings and INSET
  • Advise on and contribute to the professional development of staff, including whole school INSET provision
  • Provide regular information to the Head and SLT on the evaluation of Learning Support provision
  • Use summative and digital data to track trends and individuals’ progress in the Learning Support Department
  • Liaison with the Director of Studies to use the tracking data to identify possible needs for advice or intervention
  • Planning of support provision for the short and medium term
  • Ensuring appropriate provision is in place for all pupils with learning difficulties
  • Advising and supporting all staff in understanding the needs of pupils with learning difficulties
  • Providing advice and support for parents of pupils with learning difficulties or who have concerns
  • Effectively communicate to staff findings of assessments by external agencies
  • Leading the teaching of pupils with learning difficulties by example
  • Oversee the writing of reports by the Learning Support Department
  • Ensure effective use of Learning Plans for group, individual and class intervention and support
  • Monitor progress towards targets for pupils, evaluating improvement
  • Keeping up-to-date with relevant regulatory requirements and legislation, and ensuring staff understand how it affects them
  • Responsibility for the performance management process for Learning Support Staff
  • Responsibility for reviewing and updating the following Policies:- Education & Welfare Provision for Pupils with an EHC Plan; English as an Additional Language (EAL) Policy with the Director of Studies; SEN and Learning Difficulties Policy; and SENDA Accessibility Plan with the SENDA Committee

General Responsibilities

  • Liaise with the Registrar to assess prospective pupils
  • Liaise with nurseries and other schools to ensure the identification/continuity of support and learning of pupils with learning difficulties on entry to school
  • Liaise with senior schools to ensure continuity of support and learning when transferring pupils with learning difficulties
  • Keep up-to-date with current thinking, regulations and practice and further develop skills by attending courses, workshops and meetings
  • As a member of the School’s Pastoral Leadership Team, attending weekly meetings
  • Manage the Learning Support Department budget
