Department OverviewThe Design and Technology Department consists of six full-time teaching staff who deliver lessons across both the Senior and Prep Schools. Technology is taught in the Junior Prep (Years 3–6), while Design and Technology is taught in the Senior Prep (Years 7–8) and Senior School (Years 9–13).
The Assistant Technician is a member of the Support Staff and works under the day-to-day direction of the Head of Design and Technology, the Head of Technology and the DT Technician. The role includes responsibility for providing practical, technical and administrative support to ensure the smooth and safe running of the department.
Working pattern:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 11:00am – 6:00pm
- Wednesday, Friday: 10:00am – 5:00pm
This role is offered on a fixed-term basis, with the potential for the position to become permanent.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in maintaining a safe working environment in line with BS4163 and CLEAPSS guidance
- Support teaching staff in the Junior Prep School (Years 3–6) with Technology lessons
- Work closely with Senior School staff to support the delivery of Design and Technology lessons, including GCSE and A Level groups
- Supervise small groups of pupils using specialist equipment, including CNC machinery, as directed
- Support pupils in the safe and effective use of tools and machinery
- Prepare materials to required dimensions using a range of workshop equipment
- Assist in producing demonstration models, jigs, moulds, patterns and teaching aids
- Support the maintenance of workshops, preparation rooms and equipment
- Assist with stock control, ordering and procurement, ensuring value for money
- Process deliveries and maintain clean, organised storage and preparation areas
- Assist with the issue and collection of textbooks
- Support displays for open days, parents’ evenings and exhibitions
- Maintain high standards in the departmental foyer display area
- Report faults and issues promptly and maintain accurate records
- Assist with the departmental asset register
- Support compliance record-keeping, including LEV, PAT testing and health and safety checks
- Undertake additional duties as reasonably required
- Practical skills and an interest in Design and Technology or workshop environments
- A strong awareness of health and safety, or willingness to learn
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Organised and detail-oriented, with strong time management skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when working with pupils
- Proactive, flexible and willing to support a busy department
- Comfortable working in a practical environment involving machinery and materials
