St John’s has a national reputation for the quality of education and care it provides and the Learning Support department is central to the school’s declared aim of meeting the individual needs and fostering the aptitudes of each child.
One post in our Learning Support Department is currently available on a fixed term, part time basis from October 2025, to cover a maternity leave. The post holder will work an 80% timetable, working primarily with of primary school age.
The department is managed by the Head of Learning Support, supported by the Byron House Learning Support Coordinator. The department is staffed by several Level 3, 5 and 7 qualified specialist teachers who provide individual or small group support to the children. Other staff may also contribute to Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) specialist teaching where they have appropriate expertise.
The role reports to the Head of Learning Support and will also liaise closely with the Byron House Learning Support Coordinator.
Terms of Employment
Teaching Duties
This 80% role will include teaching 29 lessons a week, whether those are individual, group or in-class support . The Learning Support teacher should teach throughout the School’s term (i.e. for 34 weeks per year). A Learning Support teacher would expect to be available to offer other appropriate duties (e.g. invigilation and access arrangements during exam week, profiling specific children and recording observations) when the specific teaching timetable is not in operation.
Where a Learning Support teacher’s load falls short of that for which s/he is remunerated, from the beginning of the year, or when Learning Support teaching ceases for a child in the course of the year and is not replaced by other Learning Support teaching, the teacher should expect to undertake other duties, either within the Learning Support department, as determined by the Director of Studies, Head of Junior Department and/or Head of Learning Support, or by offering other duties, e.g. cover for absent staff, playground duties etc.
Remuneration
The Salary will be on the St John’s teaching salary scale, the top point of which is currently £49,481 per annum for a full time role; the entry point on the scale will depend upon qualifications, competencies and experience. This part time, fixed term post is paid pro-rata at 80% of FTE.

References will be taken up and short-listed candidates will then be invited to spend some time at the school for the final interview procedure, which will involve tours of the school, meetings with various members of staff, the teaching of an observed lesson and interviews, which will include questions related to safer recruitment.
