Hockey Professional

Summary

Two part-time Hockey Professionals are required for September 2026 for 30 hours per week

Detail

Tormead School is an academically selective independent school for 800 girls aged 4–18, located a short stroll from the historic town centre of Guildford, just 40 minutes by train to London, with excellent transport links by road and rail.

We are seeking to appoint two outstanding Hockey Professionals to join our ambitious and rapidly evolving high-performance hockey programme. These appointments come at an exciting time for Tormead Sport, with the opening of our new state-of-the-art home at the Urnfield, including a brand-new astro, athletics track and upgraded training facilities that reflects the school’s commitment to becoming one of the leading girls’ hockey schools in the country.

Hockey at Tormead has grown significantly in recent years, with more than 200 pupils across the Prep and Senior School now playing and representing the school. Our teams have achieved repeated county and regional success in both indoor and outdoor competitions, demonstrating the rapid progress of the programme and laying the foundations for our next strategic phase: establishing Tormead as a recognised centre of excellence for girls’ hockey in the South, and a national contender, within the next 3–5 years.

These new roles will be central to that journey. In collaboration with our partner club, Guildford Hockey Club, successful candidates may also access additional paid coaching and playing opportunities, creating a unique dual-pathway experience across both school and high-performing club environments.

Working closely with the Head of Hockey, Assistant Head of Hockey and Director of Sport, the successful candidates will deliver high-quality coaching across a range of age groups. Responsibilities include planning and leading sessions during games afternoons and after-school clubs, contributing to individual player development, supporting video analysis, managing teams on match days, and assisting with fixtures and tournaments. Depending on experience, there may also be opportunities to support the expansion of our indoor hockey provision. Both roles include Saturday commitments during the Autumn and Spring seasons.

We are seeking high-level hockey professionals with strong playing backgrounds (ideally national league or current/former international athletes) who are looking to develop their coaching careers in a high-performance school setting. Candidates should be energetic, ambitious, well organised and committed to inspiring excellence in young athletes. Typical hours run from 1–6pm, weekdays, with Saturday fixtures during the Autumn and Spring terms. Summer term work involves reduced contact time, focusing on small-group development, pre-season preparation and supporting the wider PE department. The Junior Professional position would suit someone starting their professional career and has the added benefit of optional on-site accommodation.

These roles are ideally suited to players emerging from high-performance university programmes or those already competing at elite domestic level who are seeking a pathway into high-quality coaching. Post holders will have full access to the Urnfield hockey pitch, fitness suite and training spaces to support their own athletic development outside of working hours, alongside free school lunches.

In return, we offer a friendly, inclusive and forward-thinking working environment. Our benefits package includes a competitive salary, outstanding facilities, and strong professional development opportunities across both school and club performance pathways.
